Three Kona petrol-electric HEV variants join petrol-only models with a battery electric (BEV) coming soon. Powered by a 104kW/265Nm petrol-electric combo driving the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, the HEV returns a claimed 3.9L/100km.

The Kona hybrids use a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine teamed with an electric motor, integrated six-speed DCT, and 1.3kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Combined output is 104kW and official combined fuel consumption 3.9L/100km. The Kona BEV follows in November.

Hyundai’s keenly anticipated and better-equipped small SUV arrives with petrol power and new styling, as well as a significant uptick in price over the outgoing range. All-electric models will arrive later this year.

Second-generation Kona will run petrol (initially), hybrid and BEV powertrains. Larger and with a longer wheelbase yields greater interior room. Robocop frontal styling like Staria, fully connected.

Not many manufacturers have achieved success with performance-oriented small SUVs, but Hyundai’s N Division is feeling bullish about the prospects of this sibling to the i20 N and i30 N.

The first Hyundai SUV to bear the full-fat N performance package is the little Kona, sharing much of the updated i30 N’s driveline – including front-drive layout.

Sporting a new look and offering up an extra 35km of range, the new Hyundai Kona Electric follows hot on the heels of its petrol-powered counterparts.

The Kona has quickly become one of Hyundai’s most popular models with the MY21 version being bigger, more stylish, more economical and more powerful.

Based on the Kona crossover, the emissions-free Kona Electric is Australia’s first battery-powered small SUV and is set to arrive Down Under sometime in the first half of 2019.
