Combined with a dual-clutch six-speed Powershift gearbox the new drivetrain is claimed to improve average fuel consumption by 16 per cent to eight litres per 100km.

Released: Feb 2005

Ford will brace its Courier light truck against tough new competition with a keenly priced V6 offering free air-conditioning and automatic. The 4.0 154kW/323Nm V6 will be available in 4x2 and 4x4 Super Cab and Crew Cab styles in GL and XLT guises only (there is no Courier cab-chassis V6).

Ford's worst-kept secret was unveilled at the 2004 Melbourne show in the form of FPV's first turbocharged offering. Dubbed F6 Typhoon, it takes the XR6 Turbo to greater extremes and should slot in above Ford's flagship 260kW, $50,130 XR8 and under FPV's 290kW, $59,850 GT later in 2004.

Ford's born-again BA Falcon becomes due for its first facelift in October 2004, when it's expected to appear with less weight, updated interior and exterior cosmetics and extra standard equipment such as stability control and other Territory features. It will rival Holden's VZ Commodore and its new V6.

Ford's answer to the Commodore wagon-based Holden Adventra is the $500 million Territory all-wheel drive wagon. Based on the BA Falcon but 60 per cent new, Territory goes on sale June 1, though test drives can be had from May. TX and Ghia variants will be available from launch, with a mid-spec TS version to be added late in the year. At $38,990, the rear-drive TX is just $2455 above the base Falcon XT wagon. AWD and seven seats cost extra.

Ford has confirmed April as the on-sale date for its long-awaited light car, the Fiesta. The all-new, Euro-built hatch range will comprise a three or five-door Fiesta LX, a three-door Fiesta Zetec and five-door Fiesta Ghia, each with a 74kW 1.6. Pricing opens at $14,490, but air adds $2000 and auto $3000.

Ford will unveil a mildly facelifted Escape in early February 2004, when the mid-sized crossover range will also comprise a sub-$30,000 four-cylinder variant for the first time. The 2.3-litre engine to be launched in the ZB Escape XLS is already sold here in Mazda6, but will be detuned from 122kW to 108kW.

Available in six-cylinder, LPG or V8 guise and developed at a cost of $2.5 million, Ford's Rugged Terrain Vehicle comes at a premium of between $4500 and $5000 in either styleside or cab-chassis form. It features 80mm more ride height, 30mm wider wheel tracks, underbody protection and a rear diff lock.
