The base Tribute 4WD loses the breathless old 97kW 2.0-litre for a 108kW/201Nm 2.3 'four' similar to the Mazda 6's unit but minus the SVT variable valve timing device. The auto-only 2004 range also sees improved brakes, new cabin trim, more standard features and revised instrumentation.

Fresh from its Frankfurt world debut in September 2003 and its Oz premiere a month later, the all-new Mazda3 sedan and hatch range goes on sale here from January 2004, replacing 323. Pricing should start at $22,500 for the 2.0-litre Neo, rising to $27,000 for the Maxx and $30,000 for the 2.3-litre SP23.

Just over a year after launch, the Mazda2 gets a minor specification shuffle, which will bring six airbags and ABS as standard to the Genki range-topper, and an additional four airbags and ABS as a $1200 option for Neo and Maxx models. There will also be new paint colours and minor trim changes.
