Holden will launch the Barina-based Trax compact SUV in 2013. The Trax will sell in other markets as a Buick Encore and Opel Mokka, but the local version will feature slightly different styling. It is unclear what powerplant it will get, but expect a four-cylinder engine of less than two-litre capacity, with the possibility of front- or all-wheel drive.

Holden will attempt to reignite interest in the large-car segment in Australia by releasing its crucial VF Commodore in mid-2013. The new model is expected to be lighter, more fuel efficient and safer than the model it replaces, and will reportedly be available with a collision warning system and blind-spot alert. Expect an upgraded V6 and optional V8 for the all-important model.

Based on the same Epsilon II platform that underpins the highly regarded Opel Insignia, the Malibu mid-sizer will slot neatly between the Cruze and Commodore in Holden's range to replace the unloved Epica sedan. 2.5-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines are likely plus a Camry Hybrid-baiting 'Eco' model is also a possibility for Australia.

Released: Nov 2012

Based on the workhorse of the same name, the Colorado 7 SUV will fill a gap in Holden’s line-up that has existed since the demise of the Jackaroo in 2004. The seven-seat Colorado 7 will be bigger than the Captiva 7 and will feature a third row, making it a genuine seven-seater. Expect the big SUV to arrive in 4x4 guise only, using the same range of transmissions as its ute sibling.

General Motors has confirmed the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid car will be sold in Australia. The vehicle known as a “Prius-buster” will be introduced in the US in 2010, with Australian sales one or two years later. The Volt will be a four-passenger vehicle using a lithium-ion battery pack.

GM is readying its own new-generation, Thai-built Chevrolet pick-up to replace the Isuzu D-Max-based Colorado. The new one-tonne utility is likely to end up with Holden badges and could be powered by 2.5 and 2.8-litre Thai-built engines co-developed with Italian diesel specialist VM Motori.

Holden is gearing up to respond to the challenge set by the Ford Falcon EcoLPi with a newly-developed dedicated-gas version of the Commodore. The car is tipped to have a tank tucked away under the back of the car - thereby lessening boot space intrusion - and to have more than the 175kW/318Nm found in the current dual-fuel version.

The redesigned Barina hatch and sedan will go on sale here around the same time, featuring quality interior materials. Confirmed for the European version (called Chevrolet Aveo) are 52 and 64kW 1.2-litre, 75kW 1.4-litre and 86kW 1.6-litre petrol engines, with the latter two available with a six-speed automatic transmission.

This will be the first major upgrade of the Korean-built mid-size SUV since it was launched here four years ago. Along with improvements to handling and ride quality, it is likely to come with a new 2.4-litre petrol engine producing 127kW – up from the 103kW output of the petrol four in the front- and all-wheel-drive ‘Captiva 5’ currently on sale in Australia.

Holden will discontinue the Statesman and offer just two long-wheelbase Caprice models, with the 3.6-litre Caprice V6 replacing the Statesman V6 as the base model and offering a four per cent fuel saving over the outgoing model. The V8 model will use two per cent less fuel and be capable of running on E85 bio-ethanol but power output is 10kW down, to 260kW.

Holden has confirmed that the new-generation global mini-car, the Matiz is under consideration for sale locally as the Spark. The Spark will allow Holden to compete in the sub-light segment, with a sub-Barina model against small cars sourced from Asia. The Spark is powered by a 51kW 995cc four-cylinder engine.

Holden is developing an E85-compatible version of its direct-injection SIDI powertrain. This will represent the next major upgrade for its volume-selling Commodore range. Holden expects the ethanol-powered vehicles to account for up to 30 per cent of all Commodore sales when introduced for sale from late 2010.

Holden will introduce a five-seat four-cylinder petrol version of its former Captiva Maxx SUV model to compete directly with Honda’s CR-V and Toyota’s RAV4. Holden’s replacement for its unloved Viva, Chevrolet's Cruze, was launched at the 2008 Paris motor show. Built on GM’s small Delta platform, Holden is likely to offer sedan and wagon body styles alongside the five-door hatch. Engines should include 1.6 and 1.8-litre petrols and a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel.

Holden used the 2008 Australian International Motor Show to reveal its AFM V8-powered Commodore, Ute, Sportwagon, Statesman and Caprice. AFM technology enables automatic V8 models to operate automatically on four cylinders in certain driving conditions, until power is needed, saving up to 1L/100km of petrol.

GM Holden’s updated Barina hatch is expected here in late-2008. Far from all-new, the exterior brings a new front-end with a split grille, curved clear-lens headlights similar to the Epica medium sedan, clear-lens tail-lights and a revised interior. Barina currently offers a 77kW 1.6-litre four-cylinder.

Released: Aug 2008

Holden will relaunch its Rodeo range as the Colorado in July via a cosmetically facelifted model that is now on sale in Thailand as the Chevrolet Colorado. Featuring a new front bumper and interior trim, it will swap the Chev bow-tie logo on its grille for Holden’s lion mascot.

Released: Aug 2008

Holden is expected to launch a diesel-powered Epica by late 2008. The mid-sized sedan's 2.0-litre common-rail diesel is also used in the Captiva SUV. Developed jointly by GM Daewoo and GM Powertrain, it delivers 110kW/320Nm.

GM Daewoo’s Magnus medium sedan replacement, the Epica (nee Tosca concept), becomes Holden's first real Camry rival in May. Two six-cylinder engines are available: a 104kW 2.0-litre or a 115kW 2.5-litre, with fuel consumption as low as 8.2L/100km. It's priced from $26,990.

Holden's all-new VE Commodore goes on sale in August 2006, just a month after Toyota'd redesigned Camry. Slightly larger externally but riding on a much bigger footprint, it will set new Australian-built standards for safety, refinement and ride/handling. It'll be powered by the same 3.6 V6 and a 6.0 V8 - the latter with a six-speed auto. Pricing opens at $34,490 for the Omega, which replaces Executive and continues with a four-speed auto.

An AWD Monaro due on sale in 2005 is a swansong for the current, VT-based Monaro, a model that will continue to be part of the 2006 VE Commodore range. Monaro AWD will follow Holden's first "low-ride" AWD passenger car, the HSV Coupe4, by more than 12 months as part of the VZII line-up.

Holden is considering importing the all-new, Barina-based Tigra TwinTop, which was developed by GM's European subsidiary Opel to rival Peugeot's successful 206CC. Lanched at Geneva 04 and complete with folding steel roof, the two-seater TwinTop could be launched here in 2005, priced under $35,000.

Holden's VZ Adventra range goes on sale in April 2005, complete with 3.6-litre Alloytec V6 for the first time. In addition to the V8-powered Commodore wagon-based Adventras (currently $49,990 for the CX and $56,990 for the LX), the V6 will reduce Adventra's starting price to $40,990.

Released: Feb 2005

In addition to a revised 5.7-litre V8-powered Crewman Cross8, the VZ AWD range is expected to include a 3.6-litre Alloytec V6-powered all-wheel drive version of its four-door ute dubbed Cross6. Like Adventra V6, it will be priced a good deal lower than its V8 stablemate, which is currently $51,990.

Commodore will get the multi-valve, overhead-cam alloy V6 and five-speed sequential auto it has long needed when the VZ goes on sale around August - complete with 190kW 3.6-litre DOHC power. VZ will be the last major change to the current, VT-based Commodore before the all-new VE arrives in 2006.

Released: Jun 2004

Officially on sale from May 31, the limited-edition Monaro CV8-R makes its second appearance, this time exclusively in Pulse Red paint. CV8-R offers a 245kW 5.7-litre Gen III V8, 18-inch alloys, sunroof and many cosmetic touches. Both manual and auto versions will be $60,990. Just 320 will be built.
