The first imported Commodore since the nameplate was launched in 1978 will be released in February, available in front- and all-wheel-drive and sporting three powertrain options. The ZB Commodore will start at $33,690 for the entry-level LT 2.0-litre petrol, jumping up to $55,990 for the range-topping VXR V6 variant.

Holden will attempt to reignite interest in the large-car segment in Australia by releasing its crucial VF Commodore in mid-2013. The new model is expected to be lighter, more fuel efficient and safer than the model it replaces, and will reportedly be available with a collision warning system and blind-spot alert. Expect an upgraded V6 and optional V8 for the all-important model.

Released: Feb 2012

Holden is gearing up to respond to the challenge set by the Ford Falcon EcoLPi with a newly-developed dedicated-gas version of the Commodore. The car is tipped to have a tank tucked away under the back of the car - thereby lessening boot space intrusion - and to have more than the 175kW/318Nm found in the current dual-fuel version.

Released: Oct 2010

Holden is developing an E85-compatible version of its direct-injection SIDI powertrain. This will represent the next major upgrade for its volume-selling Commodore range. Holden expects the ethanol-powered vehicles to account for up to 30 per cent of all Commodore sales when introduced for sale from late 2010.

Holden will introduce two new Melbourne-made V6 engines to its VE/VM MY10 range, using Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) technology – the entry-level 190kW 3.0-litre and a new premium 210kW 3.6-litre V6. Both powertrains deliver improved drivability, and fuel savings of up to 12 per cent.

Holden used the 2008 Australian International Motor Show to reveal its AFM V8-powered Commodore, Ute, Sportwagon, Statesman and Caprice. AFM technology enables automatic V8 models to operate automatically on four cylinders in certain driving conditions, until power is needed, saving up to 1L/100km of petrol.

Holden's Commodore wagon will be the last of the VT-based Commodore range to be replaced with a VE version, following the short-wheelbase sedans and long-wheelbase (Statesman/Caprice) sedans launched in 2006, and the utes in 2007. Expect sharp pricing, stying and big space.

Holden's all-new VE Commodore goes on sale in August 2006, just a month after Toyota'd redesigned Camry. Slightly larger externally but riding on a much bigger footprint, it will set new Australian-built standards for safety, refinement and ride/handling. It'll be powered by the same 3.6 V6 and a 6.0 V8 - the latter with a six-speed auto. Pricing opens at $34,490 for the Omega, which replaces Executive and continues with a four-speed auto.

The last change to the current, VT-based Commodore before the all-new VE arrives in 2006, the VZ Series II update is expected to go on sale around August 2005. Expect only minor cosmetic changes, more equipment, the possible debut of Chev's new Gen IV V8 and run-out deals in early 2006.

Commodore will get the multi-valve, overhead-cam alloy V6 and five-speed sequential auto it has long needed when the VZ goes on sale around August - complete with 190kW 3.6-litre DOHC power. VZ will be the last major change to the current, VT-based Commodore before the all-new VE arrives in 2006.
