Super TestCar reviews - Audi - Allroad - 2.5 TDIAudi modelsSuspension16 Aug 2002 By BRUCE NEWTON THE fundamentals, first: the Allroad quattro suspension is a familiar four-link configuration at the front and a compact double wishbone set-up at the rear, with an anti-roll bar at each end. Where it really gets interesting is the use of electronically controlled pneumatic spring struts, which enable ground clearance to be varied by as much as 66mm. Four distinct ride heights between 142 and 208mm are at the driver's disposal and can be controlled either automatically or manually via a dash-panel control unit above the centre console. Basically, each wheel has a ride-height sensor that detects ground clearance and adjusts the relevant air spring strut separately until the optimum ride height is found. Did you know?Electronic interlocks prevent the driver from choosing too high a ride height for the prevailing conditions. The intelligent control unit selects ground clearance according to road speed. Speeds above 35km/h drop the body from level 2 to level 1, above 80km/h it is lowered to the normal ride height settingAll car reviewsAlfa Romeo Abarth Alpine Alpina Audi Aston Martin BMW Bentley Chevrolet Chery Citroen Chrysler Dodge Cupra Ferrari DS Ford Fiat FPV Foton GWM Great Wall Holden Haval HSV Honda Hyundai Hummer Isuzu Infiniti Jeep Jaguar Lamborghini Kia LDV Land Rover Lotus Lexus Maserati Mahindra McLaren Mazda Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-AMG Mini MG Nissan Mitsubishi Peugeot Opel Proton Porsche Renault Ram Rover Rolls-Royce Skoda Saab SsangYong Smart Suzuki Subaru Toyota Tesla Volvo Volkswagen |
