The convertible suffers from some scuttle shake, although less so than most of its rivals. Cramped rear seats. SAAB 900S 2.3i CONVERTIBLE (1994-1998) SMOOTH 2.3-litre engine but performance is leisurely. Good boot space and comfortable seats (heated) but space is tight in rear. Glass rear window a bonus but rear visibility limited. Scuttle shake compromises ride and handling. Electric roof motors can be troublesome. Prone to developing squeaks and rattles in roof. PEUGEOT 306 CABRIOLET (1994-2003) PEUGEOT’S 306 Cabriolet combines the accomplished 306 hatchback’s underpinnings with elegant proportions but not much else, unfortunately. It disappoints on the road with rattles emanating from almost everywhere and body flex marring its handling capabilities. Fit and finish is also mediocre. VW GOLF GL CABRIOLET (1995-2003) VOLKSWAGEN’S Golf Cabriolet is arguably the most mundane looking car in this group. It combines the Golf’s proven underpinnings with a well sorted drop-top mechanism. Feels solid on the road, thanks partly to the anti-roll bar, which enhances rigidity. Performance from 2.0-litre engine is languid.
