The slick new convertible is roomier, twice as taut and generally more comfortable than its predecessor, and offers improved practicality through a larger boot that is able to pass the now virtually-compulsory two golfbag test. The 1.8-litre turbo version offers better value for money than the 20 grand more expensive V6, although equipment levels are really nothing special. The Multitronic CVT transmission, which is standard on both four and six-cylinder versions, is an outstanding bonus. Priced at $86,990, only one 110kW/225Nm 2.6-litre V6 version was offered. A favourite with celebrities such as Pincess Di, the first Audi Cabriolet was eventually discontinued Down Under on November 1999. It was a long time between drinks for open-top Audi lovers, with the current, A4-based cabriolet appearing (at first in V6 guise only) a whole three years later, in December 2002. |
