Audi A4

B6 A4

1 Jun 2001

Larger, roomier, more refined and chunkier, but equally as elegant as its predecessor, the second generation A4 sedan models debuted in June 2001.

It was headed by a 96kW/195Nm 2.0-litre 20-valve four-cylinder engine mated to a slick five-speed manual or an excellent new CVT automatic known as Multitronic.

The carryover 110kW/210Nm 1.8T and 125kW/230Nm 2.4 V6 – as well as a new 162kW/300Nm 3.0 V6 – also featured the Multitronic gearbox, but only in front-wheel drive formats.

The 1.8T quattro and 3.0 quattro used the five-speed Tiptronic automatic. In mid-2002 the A4 wagon arrived in 2.0 guise, followed by a sporty 140kW/240Nm high-performance 1.8 turbo S-Line sedan and wagon in late 2003.

At the same time a new S4 was introduced, powered by a new 253kW/410Nm 4.2 V8 and driving all four wheels.

A small equipment update occurred in June 2004, ahead of a substantial re-skin of the B6 range in early 2005.
