An all-new model, the Kalos light car was meant to be the beginning of Daewoo’s model-led revival, but in the end buyers mistrusted the South Korean brand, with the Daewoo name dissolving from Australian new car price lists from late 2004.

Meanwhile, the Kalos was much better than its ancient General Motors’ T-car-based Lanos.

Pretty styling, a fairly spacious body, pleasant interior and adequate equipment levels make for a sound – if unexciting – baby car choice.

Perhaps the old GM Family One-based 62kW/128Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder lump is its weakest link, providing just adequate performance and economy.

Gearbox choices are a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic.

Whether in smart five-door or plain four-door sedan guises, all Kalos includes dual front airbags, air-conditioning, power steering, central locking and power windows.

The Limited from late 2003 adds anti-lock brakes, alloy wheels and fancy metallic-like cabin trim.
