Lamborghini to be 100% electrified by 2025

LAMBORGHINI has finally started to plot its course toward electrification with the iconic Italian supercar specialist set to electrify its entire portfolio by the end of 2024 and launch its first dedicated battery-electric vehicle by “the second half of the decade”.

One of the last brands holding out on forced induction for its supercars – not including the Urus SUV – it is almost certain electrification will not be forced onto the ageing Huracan and Aventador with two new models set to be announced later in the year, both featuring V12s.

These two new models will reportedly be designed to “celebrate the combustion engine” and pay “tribute to the company’s recent period of continuous success” ahead of a 2023 launch for the first electrified series production car.

For reference, Lamborghini has dabbled with hybrid technology before in the form of its flagship, limited-run Sian which pairs the legendary 6.5-litre V12 from the Aventador SVJ with a 48V electric motor to produce a combined 602kW.

While the move to electrification no doubt stems from the growing pressure of the ever-tightening emissions regulations, executives insist that absolute performance and delivering “the authentic Lamborghini driving experience” are the core focuses of the transition with more than €1.5 billion ($A2.37b) to be invested into the project over the next four years.

In order to achieve the performance goals, engineers will be working to ensure the hybrid system(s) are as light as possible while simultaneously developing new carbon-fibre-based materials to try and offset the inevitable weight penalties of electrified drivetrains.

As an extra eco-friendly sweetener, the brand will be working towards an internal goal of reducing product CO2 emissions by 50 per cent by the beginning of 2025.

With the Huracan, Aventador and Urus successors all confirmed to be electrified, Lambo will then bolster its portfolio from three series production models to four with the launch of its first dedicated BEV.

Much like the hybrids, a top priority for engineers will be to ensure the car is as light as possible while delivering maximum performance, positioning it “at the top of its segment”.

No specifics have been revealed yet, however if the current crop of looming EV hypercars are anything to go by, we can expect Lambo’s effort to develop well in excess of 1000kW, possibly even approaching 1500kW.

According to Lamborghini president and CEO Stephan Winkelmann, the electrification plan is “necessary in the context of a radically-changing world” with the brand wanting to make its “contribution by continuing to reduce environmental impact through concrete projects”.
