Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Ford, Audi issue recalls

DECEMBER is well and truly upon us and so are the latest round of recalls, which so far this month consist of notices from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Kia, Ford and Audi.

 

The biggest share of the 2606 notices issued belongs to JLR Australia, which is recalling 1729 MY19-20 mild-hybrid (MHEV) Discovery Sports and Range Rover Evoques to prevent a possible vehicle fire originating from the 48V mild-hybrid system.

 

According to JLR, an electrical overload in the hybrid system may cause the metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) to fail and trigger “an electrical cascade failure, causing the DC/DC converter to experience an electrical short where the 12V circuit shorts to ground”.

 

“Vehicle occupants may notice a burning smell and/or smoke from the DC/DC converter vent into the passenger compartment,” the recall notice reads.

 

“If there is sufficient oxygen, a vehicle fire may occur, which may cause injury or death of vehicle occupants or other road users.”

 

Affected owners will be contacted by email, SMS or letter and asked to visit an authorised Jaguar Land Rover retailer as soon as possible for a free software update.

 

Kia’s latest recall affects 630 examples of the new fourth-generation Sorento large SUV – which hit the market in August – and revolves around a possible fuel leak from the low-pressure fuel line hose clamp.

 

The brand has warned people as to the possible danger, stating that a fuel leak “may result in an engine fire, increasing the risk of an accident and injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users”.

 

Affected owners will be contacted by mail over the coming weeks and are encouraged to contact their preferred dealership for a free inspection and repair.

 

The Ford recall is renewal of the notice issued in November regarding possible incomplete welds on the front lower control arms of MY20 Transit and Transit Custom vans.

 

According to the official notice, 180 vehicles are still to be inspected and repaired, with the Blue Oval reminding affected customers that the process is free of charge and could prevent a fatal accident. 

 

The final recall issued so far this month belongs to Audi with 67 MY12-17 V8-powered A8s (A8, S8 and S8 Plus with the 4.0-litre engine) being grounded to amend a potentially warped engine bay seal.

 

If it has warped, the seal can work loose and come into contact with hot components within the engine bay, possibly igniting an engine fire.

 

“This may result in a fire or smoking from the engine bay, which may cause an injury,” the brand said.

 

As with the other recalls, affected owners are being contacted and urged to present their car at an authorised dealership.
