Super TestCar reviews - Ford - Falcon Ute - XR6 VCT Pursuit utilityFord modelsResearch Ford OverviewThe XR versions of the AU Falcon utility proved to be quite popular11 Feb 2002 THE XR6 VCT ute is one of the premium models in the Falcon ute range, sitting just below the top-of-the-line XR8 model. The AU utility range offers a choice of three grades, three body styles, five engines, two transmissions and three suspension settings. The Pursuit ute was initially released as a limited edition model but proved so popular that Ford decided to offer most of its features as standard equipment on the regular XR6 ute. While the XR models are focussed more on play than work, the recipe is still proving to be a popular one, as sales of the Falcon ute continue to soar despite fresh competition from Holden's VU model. It was the only performance ute offered at the time, as the XR8 version was not introduced until 1997. The XG XR6 ute adopted the quad lamp headlights that distinguished the ED Falcon XR6 sedan from the lesser models, as well as the donor car's high output 4.0-litre engine. In April 1996 the XR6 ute was upgraded to XH specification, which featured the front end styling from the EF Falcon XR6. The XH Series II upgrade (pictured) occurred in October 1997, when the scalloped quad lamp headlights from the EL Falcon XR6 were introduced. This model ran until the all-new AU series was released in mid-1999. |
