Mazda 929HD1 Jul 1991 As if to confound potential buyers, the next-generation, rear-wheel drive 929 swung into another direction. Now in its 5th incarnation, the single-model 4-door luxury sedan stood out with its sporty, almost Jaguar-like organic styling and advanced specification. It included a new multi-mode 4-speed automatic transmission, 4-wheel steering (for improved manoeuvrability) and an optional solar-ventilation sunroof (enabling fans to evacuate hot air from the cabin). Another rear suspension redesign saw an expensive multi-link set up, which enhanced handling, steering and ride characteristics. Air-con, power steering, alloy wheels, cruise control, central locking, power windows and a CD player were standard, while the top line “Leather” model added hide trim, the trick sunroof, anti-lock brakes, remote central locking and upgraded audio. The cabin continued the curvaceous theme with a nicely integrated dash. In early ’94 a minor facelift saw the inclusion of a driver’s side airbag, larger wheels, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. Power dropped slightly to 138kW. Leather became standard, while the sunroof was a delete option. Read more18th of August 1991 Mazda 1991 929 4WS 4-dr sedan |
