Super TestCar reviews - Mazda - 929 - 4WS 4-dr sedanMazda modelsOverview18 Aug 1991 MAZDA'S fifth-generation 929 was as radically futuristic as its 1987 predecessor was pedestrian in style. The single-model four-door luxury sedan stood out with its sporty, almost Jaguar-like organic design and advanced specification. It included 4-wheel steering as standard for improved manoeuvrability as well as the option of a brilliant solar-ventilation sunroof that enabling fans to evacuate hot air from the cabin. A complex multi-link rear suspension set up enhanced handling, steering and ride characteristics. The cabin continued the curvaceous theme with a nicely integrated dash. But sales never really hit expectations worldwide as the early '90s recession took its grip. In early ’94 a minor facelift saw the inclusion of a driver’s side airbag, larger wheels, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and small engine revisions. Unbelievably, Mazda lost its nerve and resorted to a laughably conservative 929 as this car's replacement in 1996. Not surprisingly that one found far few takers...
