Range Rover Mk1 Series II

The RR Series II four-door wagon saw some significant changes, which included electronic ignition, a 38mm ride height increase, new cabin trim and instrumentation, a single piece front-door glass, revised rear vision mirrors and rear headrests on the HiLine model.

For the mandatory use of unleaded fuel in 1986, fuel injection finally was introduced to the 3.5-litre V8 engine, raising power and torque to 110kW and 255Nm respectively.

A ZF-sourced four-speed automatic replaced the old three-speed unit while the five-speed manuals’ shift action was improved.

Furthermore for ‘86, the body was strengthened, the ride height was lowered, the suspension was improved, there were trim and dashboard alterations and a front spoiler was added to the HiLine.

In March ’87 traditionalists looked on in horror as the RR’s famous vertical-bar grille and exposed bonnet hinges gave way to a horizontal grille and concealed hinges. A smaller steering wheel, a split-fold rear seat and slightly more storage space were the other significant changes.

In early ’88 a VM-sourced 84kW/248Nm 2.5-litre turbodiesel RR model was introduced, followed a year later by the RR Vogue, featuring air-conditioning, alloy wheels and power windows as standard.

At the same time a chain-driven transfer box and viscous coupling was introduced, along with revised badging and concealed door hinges.

The luxury Vogue SE of June ’89 added a CD player and sunroof.
