Audi 100

C2 100

1 Mar 1978

Bigger, stronger and roomier than its predecessor, the C2 100 introduced the world’s first production five-cylinder petrol engine – which Audi claimed had the power of a six-cylinder and the economy of a ‘four’.

It arrived as the front-wheel drive 5E Executive in March 1978, powered by a 100kW/185Nm 2.1-litre fuel-injected unit united with a three-speed auto or four-speed manual gearbox.

The model was split into GL and CD guises from December 1978 – the latter adding power windows, alloy wheels, fog lights and rear headrests to its power steering, air-conditioning and central locking specification.

The rapid 200T from May 1982 to June 1984 introduced a turbocharged version of the 2.1 ‘five pot', producing 125kW of power and 265Nm of torque.

A new four-headlight nose and tail-lights design distinguishes the 200T from its more mundane brethren.
