A model-wide specification and engineering upgrade resulted in a redesigned grille, bonnet and headlights, as well as revised wheel and interior trim, a new console and more standard features.
The GX’s 1.8 engine gave way to an 88kW 2.0 unit, a 70kW LX 1.6 arrived, there was more torque and a four-speed auto option at last for the WRX models and hatchback versions of the LX and sporty RX 4WD were announced.
Value-added editions included the RX LTD, WRX LTD and WRX Club Spec models of early ’97.
