Volvo recalls 9237 MY19-20 vehicles

Volvo calls back 9237 MY19-20 S60, V60, V90 Cross Country, XC40, XC60 and XC90s

27 Apr 2020

VOLVO Australia has recalled 9237 cars across two separate recalls, one to rectify a coding error in the safety system while the other relates to a potentially missing part in the braking system.

The coding error affects total of 9205 MY19-20 vehicles across the S60, V60, V90 Cross Country, XC40, XC60 and XC90 nameplates with the fault lying in the software of the Active Safety Domain Master system.

According to Volvo, a code within the system specifically relating to the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system is missing, potentially causing the AEB not to activate the brakes in an emergency.

“If the driver fails to react to the AEB collision warning and the system fails to activate the brakes, there is an increased risk of collision,” the recall notice reads.

“This could cause serious injury to the vehicle occupants and other road users.”

Volvo is adamant however that the usual braking system, collision warnings and brake support functions for pedestrians and bicycles are not affected.

Affected owners – those who bought any of the aforementioned models between March 22, 2019, and March 17, 2020 – are being urged to contact their nearest Volvo dealership to have the software updated.

The second recall affects just 32 examples of the MY20 XC40 SUV which could be missing “one of the nuts connecting the brake booster to the vehicle's frame”.

According to the recall notice, braking performance may be reduced and thereby increase the chance of an injury causing accident.

As with the software recall, affected customers are being urged to contact their nearest dealership to arrange an inspection and subsequent repair.
