The importer advises that production of the Mazda6 has now ceased as it “shifts its focus to further improving its multi-solution strategy”, namely hybridised SUV models including the CX-60 and CX-80.
Mazda has sold almost 150,000 examples of the Mazda6 sedan and wagon since sales began in 2002. Its best sales year was 2005 when it recorded close to 15,000 registrations.
From its initial debut in Paris to the second-generation’s launch at the 2013 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, the Mazda6 has earnt multiple awards and challenged the likes of the Ford Mondeo, Honda Accord, Nissan Maxima, and Toyota Camry during its time in the local market.
Speaking on the demise of the Mazda6, Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi said, “We owe a lot to Mazda6 in helping to make the Mazda brand what it is today”.
“Coinciding with the origins of our Zoom Zoom philosophy, its local introduction in 2002 contributed to a paradigm shift for the brand, and it immediately became widely praised as the benchmark for front-wheel drive dynamics and involvement,” he added.
“While we have seen the market shift its preference towards SUVs in recent years, the Mazda6 has always been – and continues to be – held in particularly high regard by loyal enthusiasts and keen drivers alike, thanks to its embodiment of Jinba Ittai, timeless looks and easy to live with nature.
“As we bid a fond farewell to the Mazda6, its legacy will continue to live on as we move into the next phase of our future strategy.”
Last year (2024), Mazda sold a total of 1354 units nationally, placing the model in third place within its segment.
The Medium passenger under $60K segment was topped by the Toyota Camry (15,401 unit sales) ahead of the BYD Seal (6393), Mazda6 (1354), Skoda Octavia (846), Hyundai Sonata (506), Honda Accord (137), and Volkswagen Passat (103).
Mazda Australia says it currently holds a “healthy supply” of new Mazda6 stock across all grades at dealerships nationwide.
Pricing for the Mazda6 begins at $36,290 plus on-road costs for the entry-grade Sport sedan and tops out at $53,890 +ORC for the flagship Atenza wagon.
