World’s most popular sports car celebrates 35 years with Anniversary Edition variant

6 Dec 2024

MAZDA is celebrating 35 years of its revered MX-5 sports car with a limited numbers Anniversary Edition based on the G20 Roadster GT.

Joining a refreshed – and up to $1500 more expensive – MY25 line-up, the Mazda MX-5 35th Anniversary Edition (from $52,020 plus on-road costs) is finished in the triple-layer Takuminuri Artisan Red premium metallic paint, complementing its beige soft top and bespoke 17-inch alloys.

The interior features a tan Nappa Leather upholstery, combined with beige carpet and floormats. headrests embellished with exclusive “35th Anniversary” logos and unique interior garnishing are other “eye-catching highlights”.

Mazda’s special edition MX-5 continues to be powered by the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine developing 135kW and 205Nm and paired with a six-speed manual transmission. It is also equipped with Track mode stability control Mazda says offers “a pure driving experience by lowering the intervention threshold and allowing an element of oversteer”.

The MX-5 35th Anniversary Edition will go on sale in January 2025, limited to a total of 50 units for the Australian market. It joins an improved MY25 range that sees several enhancements to the broader MX-5 portfolio, and revised pricing (as detailed below).

G20 Roadster models now offer a combination of cloth and suede upholstery “for better driving support”, along with a soft-touch Maztex centre console and armrests. Body-coloured door trims also make their way into the entry-grade variant.

The GT grade becomes the entry point into the retractable fastback (RF) models, while the remainder of the line-up is unchanged.

The colour palette for 2025 includes Artisan Red Premium Metallic unique to the MX-5 35th Anniversary Edition alongside Soul Red Crystal Metallic and Machine Grey Metallic premium paints.

Alternatively, Snowflake White Pearl, Deep Crystal Blue Metallic, Aero Grey Metallic or Jet Black Mica remain available.

The MX-5 remains one of the more affordable sports cars on the Australia market, rivalling only the Subaru BRZ (from $43,790 +ORCs) and related Toyota GR 86 (from $43,240 +ORCs).

Mazda’s MX-5 competes within the Sports under $80K segment locally where it has to the end of November achieved sales of 621 units (17.3 segment share points).

The figure places the MX-5 behind the Ford Mustang (1033 units and 28.7 per cent segment share) and Subaru BRZ (899 units / 25.0 per cent), but ahead of the Toyota GR 86 (550 units / 15.3 per cent), Nissan Z (308 units / 8.6 per cent), and Mini Cabrio (188 units / 5.2 per cent).

The 2025 MX-5 will be available for purchase from January 2025.
