Mazda CX-80 arrives as CX-8, CX-9 successor

Three-row Mazda CX-80 debuts Down Under from $55K with petrol, diesel and PHEV power

25 Oct 2024

THE new 2025 Mazda CX-80 is now on sale in Australia across four trim levels and three electrified driveline options to fill a gap vacated by the CX-8 and CX-9 with pricing from $54,950- $87,200 before on-road costs.

Rounding out the brand’s new large SUV line-up, the seven-seat CX-80 joins its fellow ‘narrow body’ CX-60 five-seater, along with the wider and more premium CX-70 and CX-90 models.

Effectively a replacement for the ‘stretched CX-5’ CX-8 that was retired from the local market in October 2023 (albeit with stock to see it through most of 2024), the CX-80 fills the same role as a longer version of the CX-60. Its overall larger dimensions also make it something of a CX-9 replacement, with the CX-90 being a markedly more expensive bearer of the ‘9’ badge.

The CX-80 launches with the same trio of powertrain options offered with the CX-60, including petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV). With 48V mild-hybrid systems also featured with the main petrol and diesel engines, Mazda is describing the CX-80 as an all-hybrid range.

Leading the powertrain options, the CX-80 PHEV combines a 2.5-litre petrol engine with a 129kW electric motor and 17.8kWh lithium-ion battery, delivering a combined 241kW and 500Nm.

This configuration claims an electric-only driving range of up to 65 kilometres, with fuel consumption listed at just 2.7 litres per 100km. Charging from 20-80 per cent takes about 90 minutes with a 7.2kW AC charger – and, like most PHEVs, faster DC charging is not an option.

Mazda’s new 209kW/450Nm six-cylinder 3.3-litre turbocharged petrol inline six and 187kW/550Nm 3.3-litre turbocharged inline diesel six are also offered, both with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, Mazda’s own eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-biased all-wheel drive.

Fuel consumption for these two is listed at 8.4L/100km and 5.2L/100km respectively.

Mazda offers four trim levels for the CX-80, in the Pure, Touring, GT, and flagship Azami. Pricing starts from $54,950 + ORC for the Pure AWD and goes up to $87,200 + ORC for the Azami PHEV AWD.

Features for the entry-level Pure include 18-inch Grey metallic alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch main display, and a 7.0-inch driver display. There is also Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wireless and USB-C connectivity), a 360-degree monitor, smart brake support with turn-across traffic assistance, blind-spot monitoring with vehicle exit warning, and LED headlights with auto on/off and high beam control.

Stepping up, the Touring trim adds leather seats with power adjustment for both front seats, driver memory settings, heated front seats, a larger 12.3-inch display for PHEV models, a remote-operated power tailgate, and wireless phone charging.

The GT trim upgrades to 20-inch black metallic alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and a personalised system that restores driver settings automatically. Other features include a handsfree remote power tailgate, heated second-row seats, and a premium 12-speaker Bose audio system. Body-coloured wheelarches and lower cladding are also included.

At the top of the range, the Azami offers 20-inch grey metallic and machined alloy wheels, a 360-degree monitor with ‘See-Through View’, black Nappa leather upholstery, and ventilated front seats.

LED headlights with signature lighting and Mazda’s ‘Personalise system with Easy Entry and Driving Position Guide’ also come standard.

An optional $5000 SP Package, exclusive to the Azami, includes tan Nappa leather, 20-inch black metallic alloy wheels, a gloss black honeycomb grille, dark LED headlights, second-row ventilated captain’s chairs (making for a six-seat configuration), and a suede dashboard panel.

Safety features across the range include smart brake support for turning across traffic, pedestrian and cyclist detection, reversing support, and rear cross-traffic alert. front cross traffic alert and driver monitoring for drowsiness detection are also standard.

Mazda Connected Services, integrated with the MyMazda smartphone app, provide remote features like vehicle status and health, stolen vehicle assistance, and emergency SOS.

The CX-80 is available in eight colours, including the new Melting Copper metallic finish.
