Brembo premieres AI braking technology

Anchors: Sensify 'smart' technology learns and adapts to a driver's braking style.

Sensify intelligent braking system to offer custom pedal input and more

26 Oct 2021

BREMBO has taken the wraps off its latest braking technology which integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the company’s existing braking components to provide a “flexible and revolutionary” platform in which software plays an active role.

Said to provide a “unique driving experience” the technology – dubbed Sensify – combines software, predictive algorithms and data management to digitally control the brake system. Brembo said the system could revolutionise braking performance in much the same way as anti-lock braking systems (ABS) did back in 1971.

Sensify allows different braking modes to be selected by the driver, similar to existing adaptive engine and transmission mapping.

Bembo said the technology offers more precise handling by accurately distributing brake force to individual wheels as required. It’s also said to be more sustainable, ensuring the absence of drag between the pad and rotor wherever possible.

Brembo said the technology is intuitive, responsive, and smooth, and that it delivers “expected levels of performance” when required, “combined with exceptional control”. The system also has the potential to expand the autonomous driving abilities of future models by readily linking to existing sensor technology.

Brembo CEO Daniele Schillaci said that in introducing Sensify, “Brembo is pushing the boundaries of what is possible with a braking system, opening up entirely new opportunities to drivers to improve their experience on the road and customise brake response to their driving style.”

“Sensify gives drivers the peace of mind they are looking for [and] fully embraces our vision of turning energy into inspiration,” he said.

“It’s another significant step forward in providing cutting-edge, innovative, intelligent, and sustainable solutions to the automotive industry.”

Brembo said data collection is leveraged to improve the driver experience, the braking system essentially ‘learning’ and adapting itself to suit a particular driving style.

The system may be updated as newer software iterations are developed, delivering what Brembo said is “driving pleasure and total safety”.

The Italian manufacturer said its new technology also opens up opportunities in car design, offering flexibility for car-makers and simplifying integration into both electric and combustion engine platforms.

It said the system can be adapted to suit a range of models including city and sports cars, while potentially also having use in the commercial vehicle sector.

Sensify is expected to be on the market from the start of 2024.
