Five stars for Audi Q3, BMW X5, Volvo S60, Peugeot 508

THE European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) has awarded five-star crash safety ratings to the Audi Q3 small SUV, BMW X5 large SUV, Peugeot 508 large sedan/wagon and Volvo 60 Series medium sedan/wagon.

 

Audi’s newest small SUV recorded the best overall score, performing well across the board, including a 95 per cent rating for adult occupant protection.

 

The Q3 registered scores of 6.9 and 7.7 out of eight for the frontal offset and frontal full width tests, with a mix of ‘good’ and ‘adequate’ protection for passengers. It scored 1.7 out of two for the whiplash test, while full marks were awarded for the lateral impact test and city autonomous emergency braking (AEB).

 

Child occupant protection was rated at 86 per cent with 23.5 out of 24 scored when protecting six-and 10-year-old children, while safety features returned a score of seven out of 13 and full points for child seat restraints.

 

It scored 26.6 out of 36 for the pedestrian impact test, with strong lower bumper protection, while AEB protection for pedestrians netted 10.1 out of 12 points.

 

Safety assist was rated at 85 per cent with full marks for seatbelt reminders and lane support systems, a near-perfect 2.9 out of three for interurban AEB and 1.3 out of three for the speed assistance systems.

 

BMW’s fourth-generation X5 scored 89 per cent for adult occupant protection – a solid score but the lowest of the four tested models – with ‘good’ and ‘adequate’ protection in the frontal offset test, except for the driver’s thighs.

 

Frontal full width test was scored at 7.5 out of eight, while the whiplash and lateral impact tests were rated at 1.6 out of two and 15.2 out of 16, respectively. City AEB was awarded full points.

 

Child occupant protection netted an overall score of 86 per cent, with 23.9 out of 24 for six- and ten-year-old protection, seven out of 13 for safety features and 11.7 out of 12 for child seat restraints.

 

Vulnerable road user protection was rated at 75 per cent with 24.2 out of 36 for the pedestrian impact protection test, losing points with poor upper bumper protection. Pedestrian AEB protection scored full marks.

 

Safety assist scored 75 per cent with 2.8 out of three for speed assistance, 2.5 out of three for seatbelt reminders, just 1.8 out of four for lane support and 2.8 out of three for interurban AEB.

 

Peugeot’s 508 large car scored an equal-best 96 per cent for adult occupant protection, with 7.3 and 7.6 out of eight for the frontal offset and frontal full width tests, 1.7 out of 2 for the whiplash test and full marks for the lateral impact test and city AEB.

 

Child occupant protection netted an overall score of 86 per cent with near-full marks for the six- and ten-year-old crash tests, seven out of 13 for safety features and full marks for child seat restraints.

 

A score of 71 per cent was awarded for vulnerable road users with generally good protection on the lower bumper and bonnet, but poor on the A-pillars and windshield. Pedestrian AEB was rated at 7.6 out of 12.

 

Safety assist systems achieved an overall 79 per cent score with 2.5 out of three for speed assistance and seatbelt reminders, 3.3 out of four for lane support systems and 2.1 out of three for interurban AEB. The ratings apply to all variants of both wagon and sedan.

 

Volvo’s S60/V60 sedan and wagon also nabbed a 96 per cent adult occupant protection score, with 7.3 and 7.8 out of eight for the frontal offset and frontal full width tests, 1.9 out of two for the whiplash test and 15.8 out of 16 for the lateral impact test. Full marks were awarded for city AEB.

 

The Volvo achieved a perfect score in the six- and ten-year-old protection test as part of an 84 per cent overall child occupant protection score, while safety features scored six out of 13 and child seat restraints 11.3 out of 12.

 

Vulnerable road user protection was rated at 74 per cent overall with 26.9 out of 36 for impact protection and 8.9 out of 12 for pedestrian AEB.

 

Safety assist was rated at 76 per cent with 2.5 out of three for speed assistance and seat belt reminders, 2.3 out of four for lane support systems and 2.8 out of three for interurban AEB.

 

The swathe of five-star ratings come a few days after Jeep’s new JL Wrangler was given a one-star rating, while the Fiat Panda supermini did not even score a single star.

 

It is anticipated that, for the most part, the Euro NCAP results will apply to Australian variants.
