US or Oz, who has the best EV choice?EV uptake is considerably higher in the US, but the Aussie market still has a lot to offer6 Oct 2022 THE US electric vehicle market may appear to be flourishing when compared to that Down Under. Simply, American consumers have more choice than Australian buyers when it comes to electric vehicles, with government subsidies providing a more affordable pathway to zero-emissions motoring.
But just how disparate is the technology gap? We compiled a list of the electric vehicles available in both markets this week to see how ‘behind’ Australia really is when it comes to plugging in – complete with the most accurate price comparison we could muster.
The results might surprise you…
While the US can look forward to as many as 150 new EVs over the next four years, in the here-and-now Australia isn’t as far behind as you might imagine.
If you don’t have time to skip through the list below, we’ll save you the suspense. In the USA there are 49 electric vehicle models (not including variants thereof) available for purchase right now while here in Australia there are 36.
Considering our population (and therefore buying power) in relation to the good ole US of A, that’s not a bad effort; and with all other things being equal (when they’re really not), the price paid for EVs in Australia really isn’t as steep as you might have considered.
Of course, we’re generalising here, and every make and model tells its own story. But at the end of the day – when you go home and plug your EV into the socket – there is a lot to like about the direction the Australian EV market is heading… well, except perhaps for the political side of the argument.
In the meantime, here’s the list.
