News - ContinentalContinental launches eContact dedicated EV tyreEV bias tyre formulated to handle increased weight, demands of electric cars says Continental1 Mar 2024 By MATT BROGAN CONTINENTAL has announced the arrival of its EV-specific eContact tyre range in Australia this week, the range arriving to cater for what the German manufacturer says are the escalating requirements of today’s EV drivers.
According to the manufacturer, the Continental eContact sets a new standard for EV-dedicated tyres and is formulated specifically to handle the increased weight and instantaneous torque delivery possessed by electric vehicles.
The tyre range features puncture protection in the form of Continental’s ContiSeal technology the brand says provides peace of mind for EV drivers who have had to forego the reassurance of a spare tyre.
The technology combines a “sticky, viscous layer” that is said to be instantly capable of sealing “80 per cent of punctures up to 5mm in diameter”.
Additionally, the eContact tyre range features Continental’s ContiSilent technology aimed at reducing the road and tyre noise that is often pronounced in quieter electric vehicles.
Featuring a polyether-based foam insert within the tyre carcass, the technology is said to act as a noise absorber that delivers a more comfortable ride. It is joined by a “noise breaking” tread design that is designed to block the sound waves generated by the tyre, further reducing road noise.
At the same time, on-road safety with the eContact is enhanced with a blade edge pattern and asymmetric sipe geometry that guarantees better wet-handling and braking performance.
Moreover, Continental says it has delivered the tyre to market with the low-rolling resistance properties EV buyers expect, and a “refined polymer network” within the tyre’s construction that reduces deformation of the tread under heavy acceleration, braking, and cornering manoeuvres.
“We are proud to offer a safe and reliable tyre to EV consumers in the form of eContact. Providing drivers with the best driving experience has always been our main priority and this new tyre reflects our continued investment into new, trailblazing offerings,” said Continental Tyres Australia managing director, Mitchell Golledge.
Present sizing offers availability for a wide range of Australian market EV models, including those from Hyundai, MG, Polestar, Tesla, and Volkswagen.
