News - BMWBMWs recalled over brake failure potentialTen BMW models, 7168 units recalled for electronics fault affecting brakes and safety systems11 Mar 2024 By MATT BROGAN BMW Australia has recalled 10 of its most popular models due to a suspected failure of an electronic component affecting the vehicles’ braking and safety systems.
The recall notice covers 2022 and 2023 plated examples of petrol-powered 5 Series and 7 Series models, related i5 and i7 electric models, and ‘X’ badged SUV models including the X1 (pictured) and iX1, X5, X6, X7 and XM.
According to the recall notice issued on the Australian government’s Vehicle Recalls website, a manufacturing defect means signal interference may occur within the electronics of the braking system, resulting in higher pedal force for braking action and a loss of the vehicle’s anti-lock braking and dynamic stability control systems.
The notice says drivers will be alerted to the issue via a brake warning light in the instrument cluster and an accompanying message on the central display.
Vehicle Recalls says that in such an event, the vehicle remains controllable, but braking distances may be extended. It suggests that a reduction in braking performance could lead to the risk of an accident resulting in injury to vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and other road users.
If the warning message is displayed, drivers are urged to follow the instructions and promptly contact their nearest BMW dealership. Owners of affected vehicles will receive written communication from BMW Australia on how to have the issue addressed.
All vehicle owners will be asked to bring their vehicle to a BMW dealership to have the electronic brake system controller replaced at no cost when the necessary parts are available.
Alternatively, owners may also with to contact BMW Australia customer service directly on 1800 243 675.
