Aston Martin DB10 roars into action

ACTION scenes of James Bond’s new wheels, a bespoke Aston Martin DB10, have emerged in trailers for the next 007 spy movie, Spectre, due out in November.

Zooming through city traffic, smoking handbrake turns, shooting flames at baddie Mr Hinx’s Jaguar C-X75, and other acts of British spy daring-do feature in the clips of the DB10 – a model specially built for the movie in a run of just 10 hand-built vehicles.

Strictly a film prop, Mr Bond’s company car will not go into production for customers, but depending on who you believe, the DB10 is said to foreshadow the replacement for the 11-year-old Aston DB9 or the 2017 V8 Vantage.

Officially, Aston is saying the DB10 shows off its new design direction, which could mean it will be spread over all models in its range over time. These models will get light-weight construction and Mercedes AMG-supplied engines.

The release of Spectre – the 24th Bond film – marks the 50th anniversary of Aston’s association with the James Bond film franchise, although not every movie has featured the British marque.

Much of the film was shot on location in the snow-covered Austrian Alps, Mexico City and Morocco, although the Aston car chase scenes were shot in Roma, along the Tiber River.

The city streets were close at night for the shoot, which involved cars fitted with roll cages for safety.

Land Rovers, Range Rovers and other vehicles also make appearances in the movie, with at least one car meeting a sticky end by ploughing through what appears to be a barn, many metres off the ground.

British actor Daniel Craig is back for the latest Bond adventure, although it is pretty certain that stunt drivers occupied the driver’s seat of the DB10 in most shots. The same goes for the villain’s Jaguar C-X75, which is based on the concept shown at the 2010 Paris motor show.

The hybrid Jaguar was stillborn, being killed off before production started in 2013, and it seems likely that it meets another sticky end on the screen.
