New models - BMW - 2 Series - Gran Coupe2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe revealed, pricedThe littlest BMW sedan gets new looks and more kit, following the refreshed 1 Series25 Oct 2024 By MIKE STEVENS THE refreshed 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has been revealed and detailed for Australia, following the June unveiling of its 1 Series hatch sibling.
Like the 1er, the new four-door 2 Series gets a sleek and more aggressive snout, headlined in M235 form by a blacked-out grille and sleek new headlights that do away with the stepped lamps and jewelled grille we first saw locally in 2020.
Another ‘feature’ shared with the 1 Series is the new 2 sedan’s concept of what constitutes a generational leap. Although it is effectively a comprehensive mid-life facelift, BMW is doing away with its usual LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) language and moving directly from the F44 model code to a new F74 designation.
The new 2 Series Gran Coupe will reach Australia in the first quarter of 2025, launching with the base 218 and the flagship M235 xDrive. Like the hatch, Gran Coupe models have lost the iconic ‘i’ from their badges, which are now reserved for BMW i electric models.
Pricing is up for the new model year, growing to $58,800 before on-road costs (up $1900) for the entry 218 and $85,500 + ORC (up $5600) for the M235i.
The entry-level 218 is powered by a 115kW/230Nm 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, driving the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch ransmission.
At the other end of a wide power divide is the M235 xDrive, its 233kW/400Nm 2.0L turbo-petrol four working together with all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch auto (replacing the outgoing model’s eight-speed) to deliver a 0-100km/h time of just 4.9 seconds.
A 141kW/280Nm 220i Gran Coupe model was introduced after launch in 2020 to very slightly bridge the grand space between the 218i and M235i, but BMW has made no mention of that option in this refreshed line-up.
Along with its new looks, BMW says the F74 2 Series Gran Coupe benefits from increased chassis rigidity, recalibrated kinematics, and a refined steering response. Standard Adaptive M Suspension is also standard, for variable, frequency-selective dampening and a lower ride height.
For 2025, the 218 gains a laundry list of new features as standard equipment, including a larger 10.7-inch main display (up from 10.25”) running the updated Operating System 9, and a built-in eSIM with 5G support.
Also new is adaptive suspension, BMW’s Digital Key Plus, adaptive cruise control, matrix LED headlights, and automatic high beams. Interior upgrades include heated front seats (in artificial leather), a dashcam, and a 360-degree camera system with reverse assistant.
Carrying over from the F44 are the M Sport styling package, 18-inch alloy wheels, 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, power-adjustable front seats with driver memory, a wireless charging pad, DAB+ digital radio, and smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Safety and driver assistance include lane change and departure warnings, rear cross-traffic alert, and speed sign recognition, supported by autonomous emergency braking and a tyre repair kit.
The M235 xDrive builds on this with new features that include lumbar support and a massage function for the front seats, a black-painted roof, and a heated steering wheel.
As with the outgoing model, the 2025 M235 is equipped as standard with 19-inch M alloy wheels, Harman/Kardon audio, dark blue M Sport brake callipers, a panoramic sunroof, a rear spoiler, and advanced driver aids like lane-keep assist, lane centring, front cross-traffic alert, and collision evasion assistance.
