Smooth front and rear styling grafted on to the ageing 1.5i’s mid section distinguished the Cielo.

The previous three-pronged model range was doubled with the introduction of a 66kW GLX version sporting a twin-cam, multi-valve 1.5L engine, bigger wheels, electric windows, central locking and plusher trim.

The GL denoted the base Cielo and included power steering and a revised 55kW 1.5L engine.

Daewoo claimed it enlisted Porsche’s help to refine the Cielo’s drivetrain and suspension. New options included anti-lock brakes and a driver’s side airbag.

Curiously, the smaller engine’s four-speed auto option was discontinued for a three-speed auto option in mid-’96, although the GLX retained the extra ratio auto.

The Lanos – a re-bodied Cielo – replaced the passenger car range in July ’97.
