THE Lancer VR-X coupe is a cheap way into the bottom end of the lifestyle market. It looks distinctive enough not to be too closely identified with the four-door Lancer sedan, offers adequate if not startling performance, handles well and is nicely constructed. And, with the VR-X body kit, it's bound to make an impression on the nightclub circuit. Alas, the lack of standard airbags is an eloquent comment on manufacturer priorities.

Family Tree: LancerThe front-drive Lancer coupe is about the cheapest way to gain entry into the semi-sports market. The styling is clean, if a little bland, and the 1.5-litre 65kW engine delivers only moderate performance. The GLXi delivers more with 1.8 litres and 86kW. No hatch means compromised luggage space.
