Super TestCar reviews - Hyundai - Coupe - FXHyundai modelsOverview18 Aug 1996 PERHAPS Hyundai's first segment winner, the striking (some say crazily styled) Coupe really put the frighteners on the laurel-resting Toyota Celica in the mid-to-late 1990s, toppling it from the top of the sales charts after exposing it as the over-priced and under-performing Camry coupe that it was. Porsche was said to have honed the handling, and compared to the Coupe FX's insipid predecessor this model was certainly far more a driver's car. Plus its interior was equally sporty, with attractive instrumentation and a suitably racy shade of black materials everywhere. But Hyundai couldn't leave well enough alone, and gave the Coupe range what is possibly the most unattractive facelift in living memory. Any gains in refinement and dynamic ability the '99-'02 Coupe made was lost on the public because of the way it looked. And what's more of a tragedy for Hyundai is that its very impressive replacement, the 2002 Tiburon, hasn't been able to regain the sales glory of its '96-'99 predecessor. Which is a shame...
