HONDA really had a good thing going with the first Integra Type R - frenetic speed, superb handling, street cred... But it squandered it all with its fatter and more refined successor, the 2001 version. So in steps the Type S, which may be less racy, but is faster, safer, more comfortable - and has no image to live up to... Believe it or not, it's actually much more of a success as a sports hatchback-coupe.

Honda Integra Type R
Released: August 01
Ended: September 04
Family Tree: IntegraTHE 2001 Integra Type R proved to be one of the biggest disappointments in recent motoring history, failing comprehensively to capture the raw speed and electric excitement of its stripped down, bare-essentials predecessor. That’s because Honda Australia sneaked in the Japanese-market Type S with Type R badges. But, bottom-pinching sports seats aside, it wasn’t all bad, offering punchy performance and excellent handling capabilities from a quality hatchback coupe. Thankfully the importer has come clean now.
