Super TestCar reviews - Ford - F-Series - F250 XLT Crew Cab utilityFord modelsSteering6 Jun 2002 WITH an overall length of 6243mm and a kerb weight of 2612kg, the F250 crew-cab is an extremely long and heavy utility when compared with Australia's leading heavy duty 4x4 utility import, the LandCruiser 78, which measures 5075mm and weighs in at 2027kg. The first few kilometres you travel behind the wheel of this vehicle are tense as you adjust to the turning space required to negotiate corners and roundabouts around town. But as you settle in you realise the vehicle, although wider than most on the road at 2031mm, still has enough lane space to allow it to pass easily on the inside in heavy traffic where necessary and negotiate lane changes confidently enough. The recirculating ball steering with power assist is well weighted and has a smooth travel from end to end, making it feel very responsive. The steering column itself is tilt adjustable only, which is disappointing in this big cabin, but the wheel has a comfortable grip and there is little, if any, backlash on rough roads. The vehicle points easily into corners and tracks well out of corners with no oversteer or understeer complications. Despite the 16.37-metre turning circle (LandCruiser 78 is 14.2 metres), the steering is a major contributing factor in making this oversized ute a pleasure to drive.
