Toyota’s designers and engineers in Melbourne created the facelifted Avalon – a historical first for the company – that was meant to impart “increased prestige and refinement”.

The external makeover included a new nose (affecting the headlights, grille and bumper) and rear (revised taillights, valance, boot lid, bumper), as well as redesigned side protection mouldings and alloy wheels.

Inside there was new trim, a redesigned centre console, upgraded audio systems and fresh instrumentation graphics.

Better ride comfort and steering response were the upshots of the re-fettled suspension and steering, while improved braking, sound deadening, and headlamp performance were also augmented.

All models – now in GXi, VXi and Grande guises – include dual front airbags, anti-lock brakes, cruise control, a CD player, alloy wheels and air-conditioning.

Toyota discontinued Australian Avalon production in mid-'05.
