Proton enjoyed stellar success in the UK in the late 1980s with its early-'80s ex-Mitsubishi cast-off Lancer range, and expected similar things in Australia in 1995 when it introduced the still-current CC Lancer-based Wira small car. But cracking this market is extremely hard for established carmakers, let alone for up-start newcomers.
