The Satria was Proton's entry-level model in Australia until the Savvy 1.2 succeeded it in 2006. It began life back in 1992 as the Mitsubishi CC Mirage, a three-door hatchback that was never imported into Australia.

The Persona first appeared in Australia as the Wira, but both cars owe their existence to the 1992-1996 Mitsubishi CC Lancer. For 2008 Proton Cars revived the Persona nameplate for its second-generation small car based on the Gen.2 five-door hatch.

Proton enjoyed stellar success in the UK in the late 1980s with its early-'80s ex-Mitsubishi cast-off Lancer range, and expected similar things in Australia in 1995 when it introduced the still-current CC Lancer-based Wira small car. But cracking this market is extremely hard for established carmakers, let alone for up-start newcomers.
