Holden Gemini

TD Gemini

1 Apr 1978

A year earlier Holden created a minor revolution thanks to German engineer (and later company chief) Peter Hanenberger’s radical radial-tuned suspension modifications, which transformed the sloppy LX Torana and HX Kingswood into the decent-handling LX Sunbird and HZ Kingswood.

These same geometry-altering modifications were implemented on the Gemini, but with mixed results. Improved dynamically, it now rode too harshly.

Other changes included a new grille, square headlights on most models, the introduction of the two-door wagon and panel van, an SL/E sedan and coupe (adding alloy wheels, more carpet and velour), better space efficiency, better ventilation (though through two less dash vents!), better seats and an optional five-speed manual gearbox.

Performance levels dropped as a result of more weight – although outputs remained at 53kW and 111Nm.
