Wider, longer, roomier, stronger and significantly bigger, the striking Mk2 Prelude’s handsome two-door coupe body styling couldn’t be further from the frumpy Mk2 Accord that spawned it.

Imported in EX model guise, it was also more refined, benefiting from an advanced double wishbone front suspension, anti-lock brakes and a conventional four-speed automatic transmission option.

Pop-up headlights appeared, as did flush bodywork and a single-arm windscreen wiper for better aerodynamics.

Underneath lived a new 77kW 1.8L 12-valve four-cylinder engine tied to a five-speed manual gearbox.

The interior bordered on the luxurious, with adjustable bucket seats, a good audio system, full instrumentation, power windows and a sunroof.
