News - VFACTS - Sales 2018Local market continues to stumbleEOFY deals not enough to save Aussie car market from third month of sales downturn3 Jul 2018 By TUNG NGUYEN THE Australian new-vehicle market slipped 3.0 per cent last month, with the traditional end-of-financial-year sales frenzy unable to top the all-time-record monthly tally of 134,171 units posted in June last year.
Preliminary figures obtained by GoAuto show that one-tonne utilities and mid-size SUVs were again instrumental in keeping the industry in a relatively strong position for the year to date, although a tough second half is anticipated.
In fact, last month’s podium featured exclusively one-tonne pick-ups as the evergreen Toyota HiLux took the sales crown on 5788, the Ford Ranger finished second (4768) and Mitsubishi’s resurgent Triton nabbed bronze thanks to a 30.1 per cent lift to 3917.
Holden’s Colorado also just snuck into the top 10 with 2472 new registrations last month, pushing out the Volkswagen Golf that recorded a sales figure of 2317.
However, demand for small cars is still strong, with the Toyota Corolla (3780) finishing fourth, followed closely by the Hyundai i30 (3547) and Mazda3 (3327) in fifth and sixth, ahead of the ninth-placed Kia Cerato (2485).
Two mid-size SUVs filled out positions seven and eight, as the Mazda CX-5 continued its dominance as Australia’s favourite crossover, finding 3136 new homes in June, while the Toyota sold 2690 examples of its RAV4.
