LandCruiser gets turbo power

TOYOTA aims to boost LandCruiser sales by around 10 per cent following the launch of an updated line-up spearheaded by a trio of new turbo-diesel variants.

The new 4.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that powers the flagship models is claimed to be the most potent unit in its class, delivering 151kW at 3400rpm and a stump-pulling 430Nm of torque from 1400 to 3200rpm.

Pricing for the turbo-diesel variants starts at $64,990 for the GXL manual, rising to $68,990 for the GXL auto and $82,990 for the GXV auto.

LandCruiser is now available with a choice of three engines - 4.5-litre petrol, 4.2-litre diesel and 4.2-litre turbo-diesel.

The former range-topping GXV V8 and standard grade petrol six-cylinder model have been discontinued.

The availability of the turbo-diesel means the LandCruiser can now compete head-to-head against the likes of the Nissan Patrol and Holden Jackaroo.

Toyota predicts the turbo-diesel variants will account for 120 monthly sales, boosting LandCruiser sales by around 10 per cent.

The LandCruiser was previously available with a turbo-diesel engine but this powerplant was discontinued in February, 1998, a month before the launch of the 100 Series.

Other upgrades introduced to the LandCruiser range to coincide with the launch of the new turbo-diesel include improved audio systems and new exterior colour availability - including Pewter.

The LandCruiser GXL models now have contrasting painted bumpers, except Pewter which has colour-keyed bumpers.

All LandCruiser wagons have full-time 4WD with the exception of the standard grade Van which has part-time 4WD.

The new GXL and GXV turbo-diesel models have dual batteries and independent front suspension.

The GXV has the following specification above GXL: in-dash six-stack CD player, cool box, moonroof, rear differential lock and factory climate control air-conditioning.

Meanwile, Toyota has also expanded its LandCruiser Prado range, which now includes a turbo-diesel automatic.

Half of the expanded 16-model Prado range is powered by the 3.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine.

Prado turbo-diesel TX and Grande automatic models have the added active safety features of vehicle stability control (VSC) and four-wheel-drive traction control (4WD-TRAC).

Both features are unique to turbo-diesel in the LandCruiser range. All turbo-diesel models also have dual batteries.
