Mercedes-Benz hatches new model plan

MERCEDES-BENZ has set out on intensive program which includes the addition of 12 new models to its line-up by 2020, the German car-maker’s development chief has told Autocar.

In an interview with the British publication at the opening of the company’s new design centre in Beijing, Daimler AG board member and head of research and development Thomas Weber said they would be completely new models to the brand that will join the line-up within six years.

“Moving forward our plans include the most intensive development cycle Mercedes-Benz has ever undertaken,” he said.

“It is additional to our regular development activities for the replacement of existing models and will significantly strengthen our position within the market.”

The comments come two months after Mr Weber announced Mercedes' plan to bring 10 new plug-in hybrid models to market by 2017 spanning the C-, E- and S-Class passenger models as well as the SUV line-up, with the revised ML-Class – due next year – likely to be first.

While Mr Weber has not revealed details of the proposed new models, a production version of the swoopy Concept Coupe SUV displayed at this year’s Beijing motor show is likely to arrive in late 2015 or early 2016.

Other new or replacement models due within the next 12 to 18 months include a new-generation C-Class Cabriolet, a Shooting Brake version of the CLA four-door sedan and the return of the S-Class-based Maybach which will debut at the Los Angeles motor show later this month.

Gearing up for the influx Mercedes is set to alter the naming system of its SUVs with the ML-Class set to become the GLE.

The G-Code baby SUV concept unveiled at the opening of the Beijing design centre this week may also enter production and do battle with Audi’s Q1, due in 2016.
