One-off fuschia McLaren 720S uncovered

MCLAREN Special Operations (MSO) has displayed its latest project, a one-off fuchsia-coloured 720S, at the annual Monterey Car Week on the shores of Pebble Beach in California – and it certainly would not have been missed.

US-based bedding entrepreneur, philanthropist and car collector Michael Fux tasked the custom-order division of the British supercar brand to create the pink 720S complete with a white leather interior and body-colour cabin accents.

Specifically, it comes complete with lightweight platinum-finished wheels and pink for the door inserts, steering wheel pinstripe and rearview mirror inside.

The rooflining, cupholders and seats are coated in MSO Bespoke white leather, teamed with white Alcantara floor mats, both with white stitching.

Although McLaren has not specified how much the vehicle cost Mr Fux, the colour has even been dubbed Fux Fuchsia and the owner apparently retains exclusive rights to the hue for use on another McLaren.

The unveiling was done by McLaren chief executive officer Mike Flewitt at the exotic car show at the weekend, who handed the car over to the man who has already purchased an orange 12C, a bespoke-purple 12C Spider and a bespoke-green P1 from the brand.

McLaren automotive executive director of global sales and marketing Jolyon Nash spruiked the value of the MSO team in a statement following the event: “Challenging the art of the possible to meet the most demanding customer requirements and then delivering beyond expectations are integral to the service that McLaren Special Operations offers.

“MSO provides McLaren owners with virtually limitless possibilities to tailor a car exactly to their needs and tastes unique paint colours and finishes, custom leather and stitching and exotic materials are all available within a bespoke commission, while beyond this there are opportunities all the way up to complete vehicles designed to individual specification.”

The McLaren 720S is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 530kW/770Nm, driving the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and claiming a zero to 100km/h sprint time of 2.9 seconds and onwards to 200km/h in 7.8s. Its top speed is 341km/h.

The 720S is, however, sold out in Australia until the second half of 2018, with supply limited by not only the demand in the local market, but also other markets attempting to get a slice of McLaren’s total 4500-unit annual build limit.

It was revealed at this year's Geneva motor show and retails for $489,900 plus on-road costs in Australia.
