Top selling Jeep models recalled

UPDATED: 11/06/2014JEEP has issued a recall for its 2014 WK Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee SRT following the discovery of a problem with the adaptive cruise control which may result in uncontrolled acceleration.

The recall of the top-selling Grand Cherokee affects models built between 16 January and 17 April 2014, with 423 vehicles affected locally.

In the United States, Chrysler said it is not aware of any injuries caused by the issues and announced it would be recalling 10,700 examples of both the Grand Cherokee and the Cherokee compact SUV, to rectify the defect.

Approximately 6100 of the affected vehicles are in the US, 950 in Canada, 425 in Mexico and the remaining 3200 are other countries, including Australia.

The Australian recall does not affect the just-launched Cherokee compact SUV.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a recall on its product recalls website advising that the defect involves the adaptive cruise control function in the vehicles.

The ACCC warning states: “After the Adaptive Cruise Control has been overridden, the vehicle may experience unintended and continued acceleration. "If the defect occurs, it may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle. This poses an accident hazard to the driver and other road users.”

The ACCC website says Chrysler will notify Australian owners of affected vehicles by letter and that the fault can be fixed with a software update free of charge.

Fiat Chrysler Group Australia said in a statement that there have been no known incidents or injuries relating to the issue in Australia, adding that it will “conduct a voluntary safety recall to flash all the affected vehicles with updated software.” In April this year the Fiat Chrysler Group announced it was recalling 648 current-generation WK Grand Cherokees over a fault with its Ready Alert Braking System that affected the feel of the brake pedal.
