News - ANCAPANCAP issues warning on KGM Musso EVSafety authority warns Australian-delivered ute lacks airbags advertised as standard21 Aug 2026 By MATT BROGAN ANCAP has issued a consumer alert for the KGM Musso EV after discovering Australian-delivered examples of the battery-electric dual-cab ute are not fitted with two airbags previously advertised as standard equipment.
The independent safety authority said all Musso EVs supplied locally since the model went on sale in November 2025 are missing both a front-centre airbag and driver’s knee airbag.
Around 306 vehicles had been sold in Australia to the end of July 2026, according to VFACTS data.
KGM had promoted the Musso EV as being equipped with eight airbags, including what it described as a “front row far-side” or “front seat centre airbag”, as well as a driver knee airbag.
However, ANCAP identified that neither safety feature is fitted to Australian-market vehicles.
ANCAP said the discrepancy could have implications for occupant protection in frontal and side-impact crashes and advised existing owners that their vehicle’s safety specification may differ from that advertised at the time of purchase.
A centre airbag is generally mounted on the inboard side of the driver’s seat and is designed to reduce contact between front occupants during a side impact, while a knee airbag helps control driver movement and loading during a collision.
KGM Australia has been advised of the discrepancy and told ANCAP it had amended affected advertising and specification material by July 31, 2026, to reflect the equipment actually fitted to locally delivered vehicles.
ANCAP is encouraging KGM to introduce a production change that would see both the centre and driver knee airbags added to Australian-specification Musso EVs.
The safety authority has advised existing owners with concerns to contact KGM Australia or their local dealer.
Prospective buyers of new or used Musso EVs have also been urged to take the vehicle’s actual safety specification into account.
The issue applies only to the battery-electric Musso EV and does not affect the diesel-powered KGM Musso that has been sold in Australia since 2019.
Neither the Musso EV nor diesel Musso currently carries an ANCAP safety rating. ![]() Read more3rd of February 2026 ![]() KGM launches Actyon Hybrid for AustraliaElectrified vehicle line-up expands at KGM as Actyon Hybrid joins the range25th of November 2025 ![]() KGM details all-electric Torres EVX for OzKorean car-maker continues its new model onslaught with the Torres EVX electric SUV |
