New models - Xpeng - G6Four Xpeng models here by the end of 2025SUVs, people mover and more to come from Xpeng – which may include a $200K flying car11 Nov 2024 ONE of the latest Chinese brands to set up shop Down Under, Xpeng, took advantage of the inaugural Sydney International EV Autoshow to launch its first offering, the G6 medium SUV targeting Tesla’s Model Y and others.
The company also teased forthcoming models slated for local availability next year including the handsome G9 large SUV and the equally attractive X9 large MPV, both destined for local consumption.
As a centrepiece, Xpeng’s show stand displayed a futuristic flying car called the X2 that looks a bit like an overgrown eight-prop camera drone and has seats for two people.
Distributed here by TrueEV, the brand is the seventh in as many weeks to announce or commence operations in Australia.
TrueEV CEO Jason Clarke was effusive at the Xpeng stand as he addressed the media, announcing a first-year sales target of 5000 units.
“Let me point out that Xpeng is a big tech company in China, big in AI, robotics, aviation and is now moving into computer chip manufacturing,” he said.
“And yes the X2 is not a gimmick, it’s real and can be purchased for around $200,000.”
Mr Clarke described the moment at which TrueEV exhibited the G6 in the metal for the first time as “a transformational time with a few Chinese brands hitting the market at the same time.’
“This is the first time we have displayed the G6 since opening the order books in early September,” he said.
The G6 is priced at $54,800 before on-road costs for the Standard Range version and $59,800 + ORC for the Long Range.
“Our dealer network started with the Mascot flagship dealer and more are opening soon including in Crown precincts in Sydney and Melbourne with 15 others in the pipeline many from large dealer networks,” said Mr Clarke.
“We are receiving many dealer enquiries and have more models under evaluation as you can see from the stand with the exciting large SUV and the large seven- or eight-seat MPV over there … They will be here in Q3 next year,” he added.
“We also have a model called the P7+, an AI-defined SUV developed in conjunction with VW under evaluation,” Mr Clarke concluded.
Xpeng’s flagship G9 AWD runs dual motors developing a combined 405kW and 717Nm (also available in lower spec with a single motor).
The car-maker claims this large SUV can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds. It has a claimed range of up to 570km and through its 96kWh CATL battery and 800V architecture can be DC fast charged via a 300kW appliance.
Riding on adaptive two-chamber air suspension, the sleek-looking five-seater G9 uses a system called Xpilot to run driving, safety and parking systems comprising 29 sensors.
A Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chipset powers XOS on the digital dashboard with three screens including the central touchscreen which actually consists of two 14.96-inch display.
The display enables both driver and passenger to operate various functions, in addition to the ‘HeyXpeng’ voice control service which can also operate many of them. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring are also present.
Xpeng’s X9 luxury seven-seat MPV – shown in 2x2x3 layout – is available in front-wheel drive with a single motor and dual-motor AWD configuration, the former with 235kW/450Nm output the latter 370kW/640Nm. Range is 702km and 540km respectively.
Said to be the only large MPV with active rear wheel steering, the X9 has an unusually tight turning circle for such a large vehicle. Luxury features are generous, with electric operation to many in-car functions, multiple climate controls and a 23-speaker, 2180W audio system on the top model.
It is not known which spec will be sold here but potentially both may be on the menu.
However, first cab off the rank is the G6 mid-size fully electric coupe-SUV built on what is termed Xpeng’s SEPA 2.0 platform with 800-volt electrical architecture in Standard Range offering 190kW/440Nm system output, rear-wheel drive and 435km range (WLTP).
The high-grade Long Range utilises the same platform, but outputs 210kW/440Nm to the rear wheels for a claimed driving range of up to 570km (WLTP).
Xpeng says both variants can be DC fast charged from 10-80 per cent in 20 minutes at a peak rate of 215kW for the Standard Range and 280kW for the Long Range.
The duo is defined by separate high-voltage battery technologies with the Standard Range featuring a 66kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit and the Long Range an 87.5kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) unit. Both offer vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities.
Standard features include dusk-sensing adaptive LED headlights, a 15.0-inch infotainment array with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and 18-speaker sound, a 10.2-inch digital instrument display, heated and ventilated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic glass roof.
Further, the pair includes digital radio reception (DAB+), satellite navigation, voice control, phone-as-key functionality, a heated steering wheel, six-way powered seat adjustment, heated rear outboard seats, wireless phone and USB-A and -C outlets, rain-sensing wipers, and both heated and power folding wing mirrors.
Standard safety inclusions run to a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, AEB, automatic parking, blind spot monitoring, driver monitoring system, lane centring and keeping assistance, rear collision warning and cross-traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, and tyre pressure monitoring.
