New models - Toyota - GRToyota GR performance range update completeMY25 Toyota GR models gain extensive upgrades, and price rises to match5 Jan 2025 TOYOTA continues its GR upgrade program that commenced in 2024 with a revised GR Supra, the focus now on three other GR models: Yaris, Corolla and 86 with the first two gaining engine tweaks to lift torque in the Corolla and both torque and kilowattage in the Yaris hot hatches.
An eight-speed close ratio auto transmission option comes on stream mid-2025 for both models.
Toyota waved a wand over the 86 early in 2024 and it remains motivated by the same powertrain but scores additional dynamic tweaks.
Line-up structure and pricing is changed for GR Yaris, a repeat for GR Corolla while the GR 86 continues as a three-model proposition including a Limited Edition variant that seems to have become permanent.
The GR Yaris was previously available in GR and Rallye spec’ now moving to GT manual and GTS manual with auto availability on both models.
Pricing is $55,490 for the GR Yaris GT manual while the GTS manual is from $60,490 with the auto adding $2500 to both, each price excluding on road costs.
The new schedule adds $4100 to the kick off price of the “entry level” GT GR Yaris manual compared to the GR model it replaces and the same for the higher spec’ GTS GR Yaris that replaces the Rallye.
Moving to the GR Corolla we find it stays with a GTS nomenclature and like the GR Yaris, will be available down the track with an eight speed auto option.
It also gains more torque compared to the previous model that goes some way towards offsetting a price hike from $64,190 +ORC for the previous manual offering to $67,990 +ORC with the forthcoming auto option adding $2500.
The GR 86 model structure remains the same at: GT and GTS with a Limited Edition range topper. Pricing is unchanged at $43,240, $45,390 and $49,600 respectively all excluding on roads.
Upgrade details for the GR Yaris start with more power and torque and a redesigned interior but much is carried over.
The range topping GTS for example retaining the Rallye’s high-performance features including lightweight forged 18-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport rubber, a Torsen 3 limited-slip differential, high-performance suspension and a newly added sub radiator and intercooler spray button for high-performance driving.
Power and torque increases by 21kW/30Nm from the 1.6-litre turbo-charged three-cylinder engine now rated at 221kW/400Nm.
The model has undergone what Toyota describes “extensive upgrades” with mechanical changes including a new Gravel drive mode providing near-even front/rear torque distribution for optimal grip on slippery surfaces.
It has a new, wider front integrated lower grille design providing enhanced cooling ability and improved aerodynamics.
Toyota says inside the MY25 GR Yaris the largest visual upgrade is a motorsport-inspired cockpit design which wraps around the driver, tilting by 15 degrees to aid operability and reduce eye movement for the driver.
“The driver’s hip point has been lowered by 25mm to provide better driving feedback, which has in turn liberated an extra 37.5mm of headroom, making it easier to drive with a helmet on,” said Toyota in its press release.
Additional changes have been made to the multimedia system, upgraded with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for the 8.0-inch touchscreen display, while the driver looks at a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
Two USB-C ports have been added in place of the single USB-A outlet; one on the centre dashboard and one for the front passenger above the glovebox.
Though possibly not to every prospective buyer’s taste, all MY25 GR Yaris variants are fitted with the upgraded Toyota Safety Sense suite of active features which now includes front and rear parking sensors with rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitor, safe exit assist and tyre pressure warning.
And a new Liquid Mercury metallic paint hue has been added to the GR Yaris’ five-colour palette, joining Glacier White, Frosted White (GTS only), Tarmac Black and Feverish Red.
Automatic variants will also exclusively be available with adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking support brake.
Moving to the MY25 GR Corolla GTS we find torque from the 1.6-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine rises to 400Nm complementing the engine’s 221kW output… the same as the GR Yaris.
As already mentioned, a sports calibrated, close ratio, eight-speed auto joins the six-speed manual mid-2025 offering a wider spread of ratios said to improve overall performance.
GR Corolla GTS runs four drive modes, including Sport mode developed on circuits across the world to deliver “ultra-responsive” shift times and make the most of the turbo engine’s strong power and torque.
Manual shift mode is actuated through either steering wheel paddles or the shift lever allowing the driver to rapidly select a gear, while launch start control provides instant performance off the line.
The auto transmission (when it arrives) features cooling fins to ensuring it can repeatedly withstand hard use.
Automatic variants also score adaptive cruise control and parking support brake with object and vehicle detection.
Maximum output from the 1.6-litre three-pot turbocharged petrol engine is now 221kW/400Nm with a peak torque reading from 3250-4600rpm enhancing response and “dynamic feel”.
Power to the four wheels is via a centre Torsen limited-slip differential providing three selectable front/rear torque splits.
In styling terms, the MY25 GR Corolla GTS benefits from new functional styling upgrades, with a wider front grille designed with openings to cool the brake ducts, sub radiator and automatic transmission fluid cooler, to enhance performance under high loads.
“The outer edges of the front bumper channel air out of the grille through ducts which prevent airflow disturbance along the side of the vehicle, improving aerodynamic performance,” says Toyota.
Weight savings of 13kg have been achieved through a new front suspension member and a carbon-fibre roof, which is now standard on the GR Corolla… and various other trimmings.
Other noteworthy new features on the potent hatch include Active Noise Control to reduce unwanted engine noises, and an updated Toyota multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility.
Moving to the GR 86 we find the same 174kW/250Nm, 2.4-litre naturally aspirated GR86 rear-drive coupe formula retained … with upgrades including special Forest Shadow paint on the Limited Edition that also runs specific bronze 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and black and tan upholstery.
The entire GR86 range is said to have better “driveability” based on feedback from professional drivers, including retuned shock absorbers and electric power steering to improve handling response and feedback.
Changes have been made to the GR86’s optional six-speed automatic transmission to allow downshifts at higher rpm, while the 2.4-litre engine features a revised throttle map for greater response and linearity, and improved shock response by eliminating the engine’s ignition delay control.
Toyota Australia vice president sales, marketing and franchise operations Sean Hanley said the upgraded GR range would expand the appeal of Toyota’s performance products to a wider audience and deliver on the style, driving dynamics and performance they demand.
“When the GR brand launched in Australia five years ago with the GR Supra, it gave Toyota the opportunity to use its extensive learnings from motorsport experience and create exciting road-going cars,” he said.
“Since then, the GR Yaris, second-generation GR86 and GR Corolla have expanded the appeal of the GAZOO Racing family, offering enthusiasts exhilarating performance and driving engagement that belies the price tag of the vehicle.”
