New models - Tesla - Model YPricier facelifted Tesla Model Y revealedRevised Tesla Model Y here in May with fresh looks, added refinement, higher prices13 Jan 2025 TESLA has updated the Model Y for 2025, taking the world’s best-selling electric vehicle into the future with a fresh look and added refinement.
More of a facelift than a complete redesign, the ‘new’ Model Y is expected to arrive Down Under in May this year and will come at a premium with a starting price that has blown out by around $7500.
Tesla has priced the base RWD model at $63,400 (up $7500), while the Long Range AWD jumps to $73,400 (up $3500), but for the money buyers do get more range, technology and creature comforts.
Runout discounts of between $4000 and $7000 are available on existing Model Y inventory.
Claimed battery range for the base RWD is 466km on a single charge, while the Long Range AWD is said to do 551km before needing to be plugged in – achieved not by fitting a larger battery, but by improving aerodynamics and reducing brake drag.
According to reports, the Model Y is faster too with the RWD capable of reaching triple digits in 5.9 seconds while its AWD sibling does it in 4.3 seconds. A Performance model is expected in the future, although has not been confirmed.
The visual changes are the most dramatic element of the update, somewhat mirroring the sleek appearance of the redesigned Model 3 but taking front-end cues from the polarising Cybertruck.
Squinty new front and rear light bars provide a more menacing appearance while improving aerodynamics, likewise the new 19- and 20-inch wheel designs albeit without deviating too much from style of the outgoing rims.
Beneath the bodywork, Tesla has re-tuned the suspension to better handle rough roads and has also achieved the lowest level of brake drag of any Tesla model – unlocking regenerative braking capacity while also increasing range by around five per cent.
The interior upgrades are also significant, with an 8.0-inch second-row display now offered as standard, sound system improvements, ventilated front seats as standard and upgraded rear seats with electric reclining. Tesla also listened to its customers and redesigned the indicator stalk.
A new front camera has also been added under the front bumper, to aid in low-speed manoeuvring, which also features a self-cleaning function that sprays water on the lens.
On the comfort and refinement front, acoustic glass reduces road noise and new roof and windshield coatings reflect seven times more solar energy for a cooler cabin.
The first-run Model Y Launch Series models will be released with a few additional features like 20-inch Helix 2.0 wheels as standard, special ‘Launch Series’ badging around the car and Acceleration Boost as standard for the Long Range AWD.
