Bonanza of new models and brands in Melbourne

WITH 34 new models, two new marques, at least six special concept cars and one very large and very novel feature "vehicle", the Melbourne International Motor Show is shaping up to be a must for motoring enthusiasts and shoppers.

The Melbourne Exhibition Centre will be the venue for the re-launch of one of motoring's oldest and most respected names - Renault.

The French company has chosen Melbourne to show its range of new cars plus a preview of what's to come in a startling concept vehicle.

Also re-launching at Melbourne will be Britain's prestige marque - Rover. The new Rover 75 combines British craftsmanship with modern technology. Rover will also be previewing the 75 Estate, due in Australia later in the year.

While many exhibitors are keeping details of their new models close to their chests, visitors to the Melbourne International Motor Show can expect a feast of new cars.

New models are scheduled from Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Citroen, Ford, Honda, KIA, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Renault and Rover.

Then there are the surprises! One very large and unusual - to say the least - feature vehicle will be one of the show's highlights.

This vehicle was built, naturally enough in the land of excess, the USA, and will have its Southern Hemisphere debut at Melbourne.

For motorcycle enthusiasts there will be the launch of the new Australian-designed and built Hunwick-Harrop Phantom 1500 which is destined for worldwide export later in the year.

Sports car enthusiasts will be able to check out the latest Cobra replica imported from South Africa and an exciting new high performance personal sports car called the Atom.

Several manufacturers are shipping special concept vehicles to Melbourne for the International Motor Show. They range from the futuristic to the almost practical and all show design details that will be commonplace in years to come.

The Melbourne International Motor Show opens at 5pm on Thursday March 1 after a special media preview and motor industry function. It closes at 6pm on Monday March 12, the Labour Day holiday.
