Only child: Borgward's only vehicle to date is the BX7 SUV, but quite what form its next offering will take remains to be seen.

Borgward marks resurrection anniversary with second unveiling

28 Jan 2016

A YEAR on from its official rebirth announcement, German car-maker Borgward will unveil something new on February 29, ahead of an official public debut at the Geneva motor show.

No teaser shots or details accompany the announcement and the Chinese-funded company has not even confirmed if the reveal will be of a new concept or production vehicle, simply stating it will be “More than just a world premiere”.

In 2015, Borgward chose the Geneva show to announce that the company would reform after nearly a 50-year hiatus, but it was another six months before it revealed its first model – the BX7 SUV at the Frankfurt motor show.

Whether the new arrival follows the first model's lead as a second crossover of a different size, or honours the company's past with a coupe or sedan model remains to be seen.

The car-maker has previously stated that it has ambitious plans to sell more than half a million vehicles in multiple global markets and branch out into other segments, but its current lone model is set to first test the water in China where it will be built.

Chinese commercial vehicle manufacturer Foton is reportedly powering the brand resurrection, lead by CEO Ulrich Walker and grandson of the original company's founder Christian Borgward who has assumed the role of president.

Borgward has also previously announced its intent to introduce two new models to market each year, suggesting the imminent Geneva unveiling is likely to be followed by another later in the year.

The company's drivetrain portfolio currently consists of a sole 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder, but a previously touted hybrid addition is yet to be seen and is another possibility chalked for the Geneva show.
