Australia is yet to be given the final word on whether local customers will have a chance to own a Night Edition, but Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific public relations and product communications manager Jerry Stamoulis said the variant was “highly likely”. “It’s certainly a car that we are very interested in and something we want but we are waiting for final sign-off,” he said. From January 9, European customers will be able to order the more exclusive treatment for their S-Class Coupe which brings a number of interior and exterior enhancements, starting with a set of unique 20-inch black alloy AMG wheels and contrasting machined rims. The dusky hoops are complemented by an AMG bodykit, gloss black mirror caps and side sill panels, while the front end wears a unique single-louvre radiator grille – also in gloss black. Mercedes is offering the S-Class coupe range of exterior colours but the optional Selenite Grey Magno is an obvious choice with a deep matte tone to match the Night Edition features. Night Edition badges on the trailing edge of each front wing complete the exterior styling. The customisation continues on the inside with Night Edition engraved on the AMG steering wheel, which, like the AMG sports seats is covered in Nappa leather available in a choice of standard black or three optional two-tone themes. Interiors are completed with high-gloss black poplar wood veneer applied to the dashboard, centre console and door trims. Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific is yet to confirm if local customers will be offered any of the special Night Edition S-Class coupes, but in Europe, three variants will be on offer. The S400 4Matic kicks off the special editions with its 270kW/500Nm twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine which can accelerate the big Benz to 100km/h from zero in 5.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 250km/h. Above that, the S500 Coupe brings a 4.7-litre turbo V8 engine with 335kW and 700Nm for zero to 100km/h acceleration in 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h. A third option is on offer with a 4Matic all-wheel drive version of the S500. Mr Stamoulis confirmed that if Australia was offered the Night Edition, it would only be coming Down Under in the most potent S500 form and with rear drive. In Australia the existing S-Class Coupe range is rear-drive only, with the line-up starting with the S500 Coupe priced from $327,215 before on-road costs. In the middle of the range is the Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe from $414,715, while the mighty turbo V12 S 65 Coupe rounds out the range at a hefty $501,715.
